Marian Stala

Literary scholar, critic, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University, head of the Department of the History of Positivism and Young Poland in Literature. A correspondent member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles in 2017–2020, he devoted a lot of research to the poetry of early modernism, including his books Metafora w liryce Młodej polski: metamorfozy widzenia poetyckiego (Metaphor in Young Poland Poetry: Metamorphoses of Poetic Vision, Warsaw 1988), Pejzaż człowieka: młodopolskie myśli i wyobrażenia o duszy, duchu i ciele (The Landscape of Man: Young Poland's Ideas about the Soul, Spirit, and Body, Cracow 1994). He also deals with twentieth-century and newest poetry, as he published, among others, Trzy nieskończoności. O poezji Adama Mickiewicza, Bolesława Leśmiana i Czesława Miłosza (Three Infinities: On the poetry of Adam Mickiewicz, Bolesław Leśmian, and Czesław Miłosz, Cracow 2001), Chwile pewności. 20 szkiców o poezji i krytyce (Moments of Confidence: 20 Sketches on Poetry and Criticism, Cracow 1991), Druga strona. Notatki o poezji współczesnej (The Other Side: Notes on Contemporary Poetry, Cracow 1997), Przeszukiwanie czasu. Przechadzki krytycznoliterackie (Searching Through Time: Literary Strolls, Cracow 2004), Niepojęte: Jest. Urywki nienapisanej książki o poezji i krytyce (Inconceivable: Is. Extracts from an Unwritten Book on Poetry and Criticism, Cracow 2011), Blisko wiersza. 30 interpretacji (Close to the Poem: 30 Interpretations, Wroclaw 2011). Author of an anthology of texts dedicated to Mickiewicz’s late period poetry Strona Lemanu (On the Side of Leman, Cracow 1998) along with a selection of poems by Czesław Miłosz published together with the eponymous essay Ekstaza o wschodzie słońca. O poezji Czesława Miłosza (Ecstasy at Sunrise: On the Poetry of Czesław Miłosz, Cracow 1999). Associate of Tygodnik Powszechny weekly, winner of the Kościelski Foundation Award (1991) and the Kazimierz Wyka Award (1998). In 2006–2008, juror of the Nike Literary Award and, in 2013–2018, juror of the Wisława Szymborska Award. Member of the Scientific Committee for the edition of the Collected Works of Czesław Miłosz.
